I spent my college years in a sorority, and while I loved my chapter and am great friends with so many people I met through Greek Life — there are glaring problems within the system that go ignored.
In my first two weeks as a member I was roofied at a fraternity party. Another member was sexually assaulted the same night. My chapter continued to host events with that frat.
When violence against women was plaguing my campus, many members of my sorority grew frustrated with the pause in their partying instead of the men throwing women down the steps.
Until Greek Life begins to acknowledge the problems within its systems, educate its members on drinking, consent, and sexual violence; the cycle of abuse on campuses will continue.
This was a small piece of my experience.
